The course traces the impact of ancient philosophical and medical thought on modern science and medicine. Students will consider how ancient Greek and Roman concepts of cause, explanation, health, disease, and anatomy (literally a 鈥渃utting up鈥 of the body into parts) developed over time into the 鈥渞ationalistic鈥 understanding of health and healing on which the therapeutic approach of modern medicine depends.
