Outreach Ministry

In response to the call of Jesus Christ to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, and care for the ill and imprisoned (Mt. 25:35-36), we strive to care for our brothers and sisters in our parish, local, and global community. We invite you to share your gifts and talents with one or more of the following ministries.



Serving Our Parish & College Community

Cards of Support

Send notes with words of encouragement to community members experiencing health concerns, personal loss, family concerns, etc.

Care Ministry

Visit parishioners in need with kind and caring conversations; in-home, in hospital, or in nursing homes.  This may include bringing Holy Communion and praying together.  Training provided.

  • Time Commitment: Periodic.  Could be one-time or consistent visits depending on need.

Knitting for Peace

Knit or crochet prayer shawls, baby blankets, hats, scarves, and mittens for homebound parishioners, newly baptized community members, or families at House of Hope.  We will teach you how to knit or crochet. 
  • Time Commitment: You can knit alone at home or join the group, depending on your availability.  Group meetings are at the parish from 1 - 4 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month.

Prayer Chain

Pray for specific, requested, and confidential intentions throughout the year.

Serving Our Local Community


Advent Candle Project

Help coordinate this annual Christmas-time gift project, assist with publicizing the initiative, and to purchase, wrap, sort, and deliver gifts.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Mentor at-risk youth by being a positive role model.  Additional opportunities to support BBBS programs are also available.

Ecumenical Partnership for Housing

Help our parish maintain a home for a local family at-risk of homelessness.  Assist with various needs when the apartment transitions from one family to the next.  Help is needed approximately every nine to twelve months. Assistance includes cleaning, performing minor repairs, stocking the pantry, yard work, and preparing a meal to welcome families. Click here for more information. 
  • Time Commitment: Periodic and random, depending on turnover.  Changeover notice can be very short, so volunteer support is important.

House of Hope

Provide this homeless shelter, which supports pregnant and parenting adults between the ages of 18 and 24 and their children, with laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, clothing, diapers, and various household items.  
  • Time Commitment: Periodic, but generally up to one hour to purchase and deliver items to House of Hope.

N.E.W. Community Shelter Meal Program

Donate food, shop for groceries, set up the kitchen at the shelter and serve food.  
  • Time Commitment: Limited (if donating food) or up to four hours per month if serving a meal to shelter residents.

Pro-Life Ministry

Participate in the local 40-Days for Life walks during the fall and spring walks. Offer peaceful prayer to support the pro-life efforts.

St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter

Provide kitchen assistance, fill shelter guest's requests for clothing and assist with locker room, socialize with guests. Assist with the coordination of parish coffee/sugar drives. 
  • Time Commitment: Three to four hours every few weeks during the shelter season, November 1st through April 30th.

Hope Center Pantry

Help coordinate food drives, fill food boxes, and sort donated food.
  • Time Commitment: From a few minutes (to purchase a food item), up to two hours a month.

Serving Our Global Community

Zambia Initiative

Support the Chinsanshi Community School, which serves orphans and other extremely vulnerable children under the Zambia Open Community Schools program in sub-Saharan Africa.  Participate in periodic trips to work side-by-side on projects with Zambian parents, teachers, and administrators.  Assist with fundraising activities.  Pray for the children of Zambia and those who love them.
