Mass Incarceration in the United States

The United States imprisons more people per capita than any other nation. What are the causes and consequences of incarceration on such a large scale? Renowned scholar and activist Angela Y. Davis argues that a prison industrial complex has emerged to surveil, police, brutalize, and imprison people deemed 鈥渃riminals.鈥 In this course, we will interrogate mass incarceration in the United States from a sociological perspective, paying special attention to complex and intersecting inequalities. Prerequisite: SOCI 100 or 122. Spring, odd-numbered years.
