Meet the Class of 2020

The 600 students in the incoming Class of 2020 come to the starting line of their college career having already begun to leave their mark on their community and their world. Just by running an eye down the list of their pre-college achievements, it is evident that they’ve already begun living into communio; maybe they were always destined to be among our own!

They embody the Norbertine spirit

  • They’ve already logged more than 4,000 service hours. In fact, more than half of the incoming class of 2020 did volunteer work during their high school careers.
  • 49 took part in youth ministry.
  • 4 are Eagle Scouts.
  • 1 has won the Girl Scout Gold Award; two have won the Girl Scout Silver Award.
  • 1 raises more than $50,000 each year for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

They’re citizens of the world

  • Students from the class of 2020 come from Canada, China, India, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Singapore, Sweden, Tanzania and Uganda; and from around the United States – from Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Washington and Wisconsin.
  • 37 of them went on mission trips to 19 different states and countries; one went on four mission trips during high school.
  • 1 is a member of the International Thespian Society Troupe.
  • 1 played elite hockey in Canada.

They’re academically driven

  • The average ACT score was a 25; 61 students got a 30 or higher.
  • The average GPA for the class of 2020 was 3.52; 76 earned a 4.0 or higher and 226 earned between a 3.5 and 3.99.
  • 437 took at least one Advanced Placement class; one took 14.
  • 117 took International Baccalaureate classes; one took a total of 15.
  • 1 took seven AP classes and 11 IB classes.
  • 20 graduated as valedictorian; five graduated as salutatorian of their high school class.
  • 163 are members of National Honor Societies.

They’re not afraid to dream big

  • 2 have won the Blue Ribbon Award for excellence in journalism.
  • 1 helped discover a potentially critical flaw with a device used for brain surgery.
  • 1 is writing a book.

They offer music to our ears

  • 125 were involved in band.
  • 90 were in choir.
  • 4 earned Exemplary Soloist Awards at the state competition.
  • 2 were drum majors.
  • 1 is the lead singer of a rock band.

They bring their A game

  • 447 participated in sports; 10 participated in four sports.
  • 50 were team captains; five were captains of multiple sports.
  • 9 were state champions.
  • 31 were varsity letter winners.
  • 1 bowled at nationals.
  • 1 was the equipment manager for the University of Michigan Football Team.
  • 1 stepped in for a coach during summer league basketball, and went 2-0.
  • 1 is a black belt.
  • 1 completed a half-marathon.
  • 1 was a three-time state qualifier for track.
  • 1 holds the high-school record for 3-point baskets made in a single game.
  • 1 is an all-state soccer player.

They have beaten the odds

  • 4 have beaten cancer.
  • 1 has overcome partial blindness.
  • 1 was homeless for two years.
  • 1 “near singlehandedly” saved performing arts at their school.

They get down to business

  • 101 held jobs while going to school.
  • 4 are certified nursing assistants.
  • 1 worked as an audio engineer.
  • 1 helps run the family goat dairy farm.
  • 1 runs a business.
